"When you start on your journey to Ithaca, then pray that the road is long," writes Kavafis.

We'd be taking our time, all right. We'd travel through our old cities, as youths, staying up till dawn, talking endlessly and one day wake up as if it were only a dream, and be mute. We'd travel to the beaches and the greens, amazed not to find our children there, young, playing in the sand. We'd travel to the woods, to the ponds, hoping once more to plunge to the bottom. We'd travel to the mountains hoping to sense some trace of the girl, Nausicaa's sister, but finding nothing but the memory, again, of having been the wrong person.

And when we'd finally make it back to Ithaca, weary, sun-drenched, old, we'd never find her poor. We'd know that the journey is made up of scattered moments truly lived, pieced into narrative by memory. And the first moment is Ithaca, and it shall be the last.
